Old old lady lay dying, somewhere in the south of France.
Her eyes closed their last.
But when she heard his voice, her eyes opened for a final glance.
And when she looked, he was there beside her, smile on her pillow.
They held each otherâs faces in their hands.
He kissed her eyes. She kissed his brow.
They sang together, softer than softly, her voice a gift,
his voice gravel, filled with decades of his love.
They sang and sang until they could no longer ...
And then together at their last, they slip-slid quietly away.
